Paula Tončić (HR)
Paula Tončić (Zagreb, 1997) is an artist whose artistic and research practice is grounded in processes of archiving, classifying, and documenting uncanny objects. Through grotesque elements, she explores the boundaries between reality and fiction, with a particular focus on girlhood experience within the context of the feminine gaze and spaces of female intimacy. Strongly influenced by fiction literature and trash horror cinema, her work is marked by a fascination with liminal spaces and the transformation of materials from one medium into another.
She became deeply engaged with photography during her secondary education, having chosen the Photography track at the School of Applied Arts. She graduated from the Department of Animation and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and during her studies participated in an exchange program at the John Cass School of Art in London, UK. After completing her studies, she moved to Berlin, where she explores the underground scene—rave subculture, the performativity of drag performances that display exaggerated femininity, masculinity, or other forms of gender expression, as well as fetish cultures. In her practice, she investigates the concept of soundscapes and radio drama in synergy with spatial installations, creating fictional narratives that she materializes into sculptural, spatial installations, leaving traces of intimacy and imagination.
